The front nine were visually much stronger in my opinion with 3-8 the strongest stretch on the course, but I enjoyed every hole. It is a beautifully looking links in my opinion but it doesn’t have the stunning scenery of nearby Turnberry, the history of St. Andrews, the demands of Carnoustie, the quirk of St. Georges, the dunes of Birkdale, the reverence of Muirfield nor has it produced the great players that Hoylake has. Bounded to the south by the Old course and to the north by the Troon-Ayr single-track railway, the Portland is a tad flatter and more compact than the Old course. All in all Portland is a decent track with some great holes but notably some weak holes, like the 1st, 9th and 12th. Plenty of under-rated course though whether Portland falls in to the category of 'most under-rated' is a matter for personal choice. The Troon Golf Club sprung up way back in 1878 and quickly attracted golfers from all over to the Old Course, then the new golf course, of course, which still provides a real golf exam. There is nothing particularly wrong with the course but given the price paid I would have expected better. They are not particularly well bunkered nor have difficult greens, but if the rest of the course could be like this, then it would be a better challenge. Troon Portland is firmly amongst the ranks of the toughest courses for girls and ladies anywhere in Scotland. Although it's shorter than its sister course and sheltered more inland, Royal Troon Golf Club Scotland provides a satisfyingly testing experience for every golfer. Portland will always be the “Relief” course for Royal Troon, but that’s not to say that it’s not worth playing, because it is, it’s just that it’s not quite the “Real” thing. Location. The green complexes at 2, 6, 8, 13 and 16 make for compelling holes and the dog-leg third is a beauty too.
